Hyderabad, India (PTI): Amidst the hype over a cyber poll for the seven wonders of the world, including the Taj Mahal, an NGO today questioned its necessity when UNESCO has already given world heritage status to the 17th century monument of love.
Raghunandan Kumar, Secretary of Planetary Society of India told newspersons here that "it is unfortunate that the people are being misled by some organisations to vote for Taj Mahal as it would lose its seven wonder status which is wrong because Taj Mahal as per UNESCO was already given a status of world heritage site in 1983.
No private or public opinion can snatch the heritage status away from the Taj Mahal.
He said UNESCO has already given a statement distancing itself from the present campaign.
Raghunandan said some private agencies are gaining out of the campaign unleashed on the new seven wonders of the world and people are are spending money to vote through e-mails and SMS.
