KOLKATA, June 12: With the rising number of cyber crimes and the failure of sleuths to bring the culprits to book even after long investigations, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has now turned to Nasscom and eBay, an online shopping mall providing free online auctions for various products, for help.
Representatives of Nasscom and eBay have been requested to conduct a training session for CID sleuths in order to make them aware of the different kind of frauds that have become rampant over the years in the cyber world. The representatives would also devise ways to help sleuths track down culprits and aid subsequent investigation so that a full-proof charge-sheet may be prepared against the accused.
The awareness course on cyber crime would be conducted by the cyber crime cell of the CID along with Nasscom and eBay representatives at Bhavani Bhavan on 24 July. Officers of deputy superintendent of police rank and below would be present at the session. “ CID generally conducts training programmes and seminars on various subjects for the interest of investigation and to make the investigating officers aware about different police work related software such as organised crime intelligence system, missing person’s software, fingerprint analysis and criminal tracing system,” said a senior CID officer.
Interestingly, eBay India and Nasscom, had unveiled the ‘eBay e-Commerce Guide’ in Delhi last year to spread awareness and educate Internet users on the various elements of e-Commerce. This prompted CID to take their help to check the rising cases of cyber crime in the state. Nasscom representatives would provide leads to sleuths on data theft, hacking, source code theft, accounting fraud, cyber pornography, phishing, online banking fraud, online share trading fraud, tracking the author of virus and online lottery fraud
