TAMPA - During Charlie Crist's campaign for governor, he promised he would work hard to enhance law and order in Florida.
He followed through with his promise Wednesday, said state Rep. Luis Garcia, D-Miami Beach.
Crist signed five public safety bills into law and announced he has signed a petition requesting the Florida Supreme Court convene a statewide grand jury to investigate gang activity.
"It's very consistent with what the governor's been preaching for a long time," said Garcia, whose criminal sentencing bill was among those signed Wednesday.
The public safety laws were crafted to enhance law enforcement and protect children from sexual predators, among other things.
"Any tools that enhance safety, reduce crime and improve quality of life are always good," said Tampa police Capt. Hugh Miller, who commands the narcotics bureau.
One law is designed to improve the Jessica Lunsford Act of 2005. Another helps Florida conform to the federal Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.
"There is absolutely nothing more important than protecting our people, especially Florida's children," Crist said in a release. "I am grateful to the leaders of the Florida House and Senate for sharing my commitment to public safety. Thanks to their good work, Florida's communities will be safer places to live, work and raise a family."
This year's Jessica Lunsford Act follow-up requires sexual offenders and predators to have specified markings on their driver's licenses and identification cards.
