Cyber Security Symposium Set for Charlotte

CHARLOTTE--The College of Computing and Informatics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) will host the 7th annual Fall Cyber Security Symposium on the UNCC campus on Wednesday, October 10th. Guest speakers from around the country will address the latest issues surrounding cyber crime and what is being done to combat this ever-increasing problem.

“The Cyber Security Symposium continues to draw attention to the urgency of dealing with cyber terrorism,” said Bill Chu, Chairman of the Department of Software and Information Systems at CCI. “Once again, we have assembled a list of distinguished industry experts to talk about this on-going global threat.

Among those scheduled to speak are:
o Dan Geer, Vice President and Chief Scientist for Verdasys and the principal of Geer Risk Services. He authored the white paper, “The Shrinking Perimeter – Making the Case for Data Level Risk Management” and has also co-written several books and reports, including “Cyber Insecurity.”
o Peter Evans, IBM-ISS Vice President of Business Line Management. Evans also served as Vice president of AirDefense, an Atlanta-based wireless-LAN intrusion detection and prevention Company; and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board for Optovation.
o Alan Paller, Vice President, Founder, and Director of Research for all research projects for the SANS Institute. Paller was also selected as one of the 100 “Most Influential People in Information Technology” by eWeek, CIO Decisions, and Baseline magazines. Paller established the Annual SANS-FBI Top 20 Internet Security Threats (1999) and was named to the National Infrastructure Assurance Council by the President of the United States (2001).
o Karl Wirth, Director, Security Business Redhat, He is responsible for security features in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat's layered security products. He also served as Director of Product Management at Sentillion, a healthcare-focused identity and access management company; and was responsible for the RSA SecurID authentication business as well as other authentication solutions at RSA Security (now EMC).
o Gene Keeling, Cisco Solution Program Manager in the Government Solutions Unit. Mr. Keeling coordinates development efforts, manages partner relationships for Lawful Intercept and oversees certification of Cisco’s Enterprise IP Telephony System for use by the DoD. He has also been involved in the development and deployment of local access VoIP solutions for CLECs, and was a program manager with Lockheed Martin’s Space Systems Group.
o John Himebook CTO of Signix, now Sungard with 16 years of technical and management experience in technology products, services and management consulting. He is the driving force behind the product and technical focus of the firm.
o Ann Garrett, CISO, State of North Carolina, Office of Information Technology Services. Ann and her organization have been the winners of many national and state awards including the 2004 ISE/CSI Information Security Executive of the Year National Award.
o Tom Holt, Professor, Criminal Justice Department, UNC Charlotte specializes in computer crime, cybercrime, and technology. His research focuses on computer hacking, malware, and the role that technology and the Internet play in facilitating all manner of crime and deviance. Holt works with computer and information systems scientists, law enforcement personnel, businesses, and technologists to understand and link the technological and social elements of computer crime.
o Robert Grapes, Enterprise Solution Specialist at Cloakware. Robert has more than 15 years experience developing and managing enterprise security solutions for Entrust, ZixCorp and now Cloakware, as well as founding a publicly-traded security software publisher. Rob has spoken several times at the RSA Security Conference, Entrust Summit’s, CSI Conference, and other industry conferences.
