Description Of University

ust 180 years ago, the benefits of a university education in England were restricted to men who were members of the Church of England; UCL was founded to challenge that discrimination. UCL was the first university to be established in England after Oxford and Cambridge, providing a progressive alternative to those institutions' social exclusivity, religious restrictions and academic constraints.

The university's main building was designed by William Wilkins who went on to build the National Gallery.

1836 - The University was renamed `University College' and received its Royal Charter on 28th November. On the same day, a new `University of London' was established with the power to award degrees in Medicine, Arts and Laws to students from both University College and King's College.

1907 - The College was incorporated into the University of London, and ceased to have a separate legal existence.

1977 - A new Royal Charter restored the College's legal independence from the University of London.

1985 - The Gower Street entrance to the front quad was finally completed, finishing a building whose first stone was laid 158 years before.

Brief Description of law college

The Faculty of Laws at Bentham House, in Endsleigh Gardens, is only a few minutes' walk from the main UCL law library and campus. The facilities at Bentham House include many teaching rooms, a courtroom for moots, a spacious student lounge, a coffee bar and two computer cluster room. For graduate students and senior academic visitors, the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, with its superb research library and seminar rooms, is a short walk away in Russell Square.

Our Research & the RAE
The Department of Laws at UCL is recognised as one of the top research departments of law in the United Kingdom, rated in the highest category in the UK for both research (5*A) and teaching (excellent) . We value research not only in contributing to the quality of our teaching and the supervision we give our research students, but also in its contribution to the development of law and its influence on legal practice and public policy. All members of staff are given time to research and encouraged to do so, and consequently the department has received top ratings in each of the research assessment exercises to date. Indeed, we encourage our own students, at both LLB and masters degree level, to think in terms of having their dissertations published in the Faculty's Jurisprudence Review.

Studying in the centre of London

Graduate Research Degree Programmes

There are two reseach programmes at UCL that usually follow the course below:

* Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law students undertake a piece of supervised research usually three years full-time or five years part-time.
* Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Law students also undertake a piece of supervised research either independently or as part of a team, usually over three years full-time or five years part-time.

International Programmes at UCL Laws
UCL Laws has a strong links with many universities world wide and offers a number of international programmes.

The Semester in London programme offers students from University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Cornell Law School the opportunity to study law in London for one term. The students follow a selection of approved international and comparative law courses, sitting exams in London before Christmas, the results of which count towards their JD.

The Socrates / Erasmus Exchange programme welcomes students on the programme froma number of European partner universities in Germany, Italy, Spain & France. Students are able to spend a full academic year following undergraduate law courses in the UCL Law Faculty, leading to a Certificate of English Legal Studies.
A small number of Independent Affiliates places are offered at the Faculty of Laws each year. These are for students who are enrolled at another institution and who wish to undertake study at UCL outside their links with European institutions.
The UCL Law Faculty welcomes students from the University of New South Wales on its exchange programme. UNSW students who have been selected to spend a year at UCL can follow the links on this site for full information on how to apply, accommodation, and other important information.

Specialist Degrees

Our Staff -
The Faculty has 50 members of full-time academic staff (consisting of 23 Professors, 1 Reader, 8 Senior Lecturers, 14 Lecturers and 4 Researchers) supported by a team of 25 administrative and secretarial staff. Teaching is supported by part-time teachers, many of whom are eminent in their field.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees cover all elements of tuition, registration and examination with the exception of research programmes where additional research expenses are sometimes charged for particularly expensive laboratory-based research. If applicable, additional research expenses will be specified on an applicant?s formal offer of admission.
Offers of admission to UCL indicate whether, for fee purposes, a student is considered to be ‘UK’, ‘EU’ or ‘Overseas’. This decision is made in accordance with the 2007 Education (Fees and Awards)(England) Regulations (SI No. 779). Students who believe that they have been classified incorrectly must query the decision immediately.
In summary, to be eligible for UK/EU fee status, a student must normally be a national of a European Union (EU) country and have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, for non-educational purposes, throughout the three years immediately preceding the start of the UCL programme. Alternatively, a student must have permanent residency rights in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the same period, again for non-educational purposes.

In addition, a number of additional categories of student are eligible to pay fees at the UK/EU rate.

Living Expenses
Graduate students should be aware that additional money will be needed to cover the costs of accommodation, food, books, travel and other expenses associated with studying in London. Estimates may vary considerably since the lifestyles and circumstances of individual students also differ, and the following should only be used as a guide. Some students may find that they can live within this allowance fairly easily whereas others may find it insufficient to meet their expectations.
For a single graduate student studying for a calendar year (12 months), the estimated average living cost is £9,000. For a married student with a dependent spouse this rises to £16,500 and those students with children should allow an extra £1,800 per child. International students should also be aware that there may be initial expenses on arrival for clothing, books and deposits which could total another £800.

Is LSAT/LNAT score required ?

National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT)
All applicants to UCL undergraduate law degrees are required to take the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) as soon as possible after submitting their UCAS application and no later than 20 January in the admissions cycle in which they are applying (final registration 15 January). We cannot guarantee that the applications of candidates who have not taken the LNAT by this date will be considered, even if their original application was submitted by the UCAS deadline of 15 January. Full details regarding the LNAT and a sample test can be found online at www.lnat.ac.uk.

Is TOEFL score required ?

International English Language Test (IELTS) -an overall score of 7.5 in the International English Language Test (IELTS) with marks in the sub-tests of 6.5 for reading and listening and 6.0 for speaking and writing

UCL accepts:
* the computer-based version (overall score of 267 plus 5 in essay rating), and
* internet-based version (advanced level with an overall score of 109, plus 24/30 in the reading and writing subtests, and 20/30 in the listening and speaking subtests).
* paper-based version with a total of 630 in the paper-based TOEFL plus 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) but warns that TWE is not offered on every paper-based TOEFL test date
