Pune, India: The cyber cell of city police has, for the first time since its inception, arrested a 22-year-old girl on the charge of posting an obscene profile of her best friend on Orkut website a week ago. The arrested girl was in love with boyfriend of her friend and out of jealousy committed the crime, police said. According to cyber cell officials, both the girls are best friends, well-educated and hail from business families in Kothrud. The girls have graduated from the same college and used to work in a BPO industry, officials said.
The incident came to light when the 21-year-old girl lodged a complaint with the cyber crime cell, stating that a obscene profile — along with her photo and mobile phone number — was posted on Orkut website.

Following the complaint, the cyber crime cell swung into action and arrested her friend. She was booked under Section 67 of Information Technology Act and Section 509 of IPC.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (economic offences wing and cyber cell) Sunil Phulari wrote to Google and VSNL authorities requesting to trace the source from where the profile was posted. “Both VSNL and Google tracked down the address and the node and communicated the address to us within a day. When our team located the address, they showed it to the complainant, who informed us that it was the address of her close friend. Accordingly, the complainant’s best friend was arrested on Friday,” said Phulari. The girl was remanded to one day police custody.

Phulari told Pune Newsline on Saturday that the complainant received numerous obscene messages, phone calls and emails following her profile posting on Orkut which damaged her image in public. The accused had even hacked the e-mail password of the complainant and as a result all mails of the complainant were under constant surveillance of the accused.”

Meanwhile, the city police have sought a ban on Orkut and other websites on grounds of “increased incidents of obscene postings and hatred promotion” by internet communities taking place at regular intervals. “The proposal to block Orkut is in the pipeline and a final decision will taken soon,” Phulari said.

He appealed to the public to refrain from posting their photographs and personal details on Orkut. Those who want to register their complaints can lodge them at 26124452 or 26124452.
