Kolkata, India- Officers of the cyber crime cell in Kolkata have turned the tables on pranksters who plague the Net. Taking a cue from this growing population which hides behind fake profiles for their monkey business, the Kolkata police’s detective department is now creating exactly that — fake profiles, but to catch the guilty.
Tracking cyber criminals has gotten tough with days. The police resorted to the sting method and cracked down upon several such voyeurs, sources in the department said.
The trend of creating fake profiles on Orkut, a friendship portal owned by Google, has turned quite a threat, paticularly to women netizens. Around 40 young women, mostly teenagers, lodged complaints with the police alleging forgery of profiles and misuse of identity. “Some created such profiles for revenge while some put up obscene albums for fun,” said Gyanwant Singh, deputy commissioner of the detective department.
Manoj K Verma, the DC DD II, said, “We are extremely concerned about such criminal acts on the Net. The nuisance creators are mostly young, educated, net-friendly men. We tracked down a few of them earlier and let them off with warnings. So far, none of them have been caught in a repeat act,” he added.
